Rep. Geoff Simpson accused of domestic violence…again
By Tom Forbes at July 9th, 2010.This week is 47th Legislative District Week here at NW Digest. And one of the current Democrats representing the 47th in the Washington House of Representaives has just been accused of domestic violence for the second time in two years:
The Seattle City Attorney’s office today charged Rep. Geoff Simpson, D-Covington, with one count of assault stemming from an alleged incident of domestic violence at Seattle Children’s Hospital on May 22.Simpson is accused of pushing his ex-wife as she tried to stop him from entering a hospital room where their young daughter was recovering from surgery.
Once he got inside the ex-wife said she tried to open the door and go in and he “pushed her out of the room and used the door to force her all the way out,” according to a Seattle police report.
A social worker told police she saw Simpson “barrel” into the room, push the former wife and shut the door.
He “closed the blinds and barricaded himself inside using his body” and was yelling inside, according to the report. Once he came out, he left the property, witnesses said.
Simpson denied wrongdoing and issued a statement today which you can read below. Friction between Simpson and his ex-wife drew cops to their home in 2008 where Simpson was arrested but never charged for alleged domestic violence.
In a statement, Simpson denies the charges and predictably blames it on politics (no doubt the “teabaggers” are behind it all.)
Guilty or not, Simpson’s domestic violence charges are a continual distraction. 47th LD voters deserve better.

Will Democrats defend this creep? This is the second time in as many years that Representative Geoff Simpson has been charged with domestic violence. There are bad politicians in both parties, and Simpson is one of them.
Representative Simpson wasn’t merely “accused” he was actually charged.
[...] is running for a second time against Rep. Geoff Simpson (D-Covington,) who is in the news again for domestic violence. Hargrove lost by less than 3,000 votes to Simpson in [...]
Yeah, I struggled with that wording. In 2008, Simpson was arrested for domestic violence but not charged. This time, he was charged with domestic violence, but not arrested. So the only thing that actually happened twice is that Simpson has accused of domestic violence.
Why is it that Mr. Simpson appears to be such a non-violent individual in the off-election years? Yet, somehow, every year that he’s running, suddenly his ex-wife comes up with all sorts of allegations. I find this pretty puzzling. It seems like, a) if he were truly that violent of an individual, they were married for a long time and she never reported a thing, so, what? She waits until AFTER they get a divorce and then suddenly she’s running to the cops all the time – but only every other year; and b) you’d think he’d be on his best behavior the year he’s running for office. But nope, no reports, arrests, nothing, nada, zip the years he’s not running, but come election year —– Makes me wonder, all right, but not about Geoff.

Lucy,
As a longtime resident and involved citizen of Kent, I can tell you that Rep. Simpson’s “issue” goes back as least 10 years. As you probably know, he’s a firefighter (with a good record of on the job performance, as far as I know) and firefighters and police officers are often able to keep things like this “in the family.” Not a shock that no extensive paper trail or arrests exist. Especially when it is your wife (not ex-wife) who doesn’t want to press charges after the fight is over. Also not a shock that he got fewer favors when he did this in Seattle and not in his own neighborhood.
Now am I painting his ex-wife as a saint? No. They push each other’s buttons. But children and random idiots can push my buttons, and guess what would happen if I decided to beat one up? Yes, I would be sitting in jail because people are (and should be) held accountable for their actions, regardless of what others do. Same holds when you are violent towards women.
As far as hints toward a campaign conspiracy, that doesn’t quite pass the smell test when last election there were physical marks left (that’s why he was arrested – they were called and there was physical evidence) yet the charges were DROPPED before the election, and this election it’s not his word versus hers, but his word versus hers AND a social worker AND investigating officer AND (Democratic) City Attorney who decided there was enough evidence to file charges. Even you have to admit, bipartisan and stranger initiated conspiracies are pretty hard to fathom, and even harder to pull off.
For what its worth, I’m also not a Republican. I’m just tired of people’s sense of right and wrong shifting with the party of the offender. Domestic violence doesn’t come with a Democratic exception.

Simpson is finished in the 47th district. The combined Republican vote total in the primary was 60%. About 3,000 democratic voters who voted for Simpson’s fellow Democrat Pat Sullivan in position 2 did NOT vote for Simpson in position 1. He’s toast.
