Bag Tax: Fail, Mayoral: Tie, KC Exec: 37 to 22

The Seattle Bag Tax, as earlier polling suggested, was dead on arrival. No word yet on whether the enviro-left campaigners who championed the measure believe this result will cause the world to end tomorrow.

The big city news, however, is that incumbent Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels is currently sitting in third place.  Nickels hasn’t thrown in the towel quite yet, but has a tough fight on his hands, even if he manages to eke out a second place, or first place finish–he’s essentially in a 3-way tie with the other two lead contenders, Joe Mallahan and Mike McGinn.

Anti-Baggers Using City Resources to Campaign?

A tip sent to NWDIGEST.COM over the weekend containing public records (PDF) may reveal that Seattle City Council President Richard Conlin and a member of his staff have been using city resources to campaign for the Seattle Bag Tax.

The documents show that Conlin’s Legislative Assistant Rob Gala (who has served as official spokesman for the Bag Tax campaign) is coordinating media interviews through Conlin’s official City Council office.

Poll: Bag Tax is Dead, Anti-Baggers Undeterred

That’s according to a new poll out from the insurance company PEMCO as reported in the Puget Sound Business Journal today:

More than 70 percent of Seattle residents oppose a proposed 20-cent tax on grocery bags, according to a poll by Pemco Insurance. Residents will vote on the proposed tax on Aug. 18.

Paul Guppy of the non-partisan Washington Policy Center came out with a recent study, showing that the bag tax is far from the most effective way (PDF) to reduce Seattle’s garbage output.
