Seattle’s Jim McDermott Embroiled in New Controversy
Politics by NW Digest Team on June 19th, 2009 with 1 Comment so far. Those familiar with Washington State politics know that 7th District Congressman Jim McDermott has been dragged through the press a lot in recent years.
There was his pre-war trip to Iraq secretly financed by Saddam Hussein’s intelligence agency. That proved to be an especially embarrassing episode for the Congressman.
McDermott has also been criticized in the past for his privately funded globetrotting.
Adam Smith: The Greatest Moderate Ever!
Politics by Adil on June 16th, 2009 with No Comments so far.The Olympian is, in my opinion, nothing short of a sharply liberal newspaper. It endorsed Gregoire for Governor in 2008; it backed Obama, and every other Democrat it could find. It has obviously been fully supportive of Democrat Adam Smith in the 9th Congressional District. In an article from this week, Brad Shannon writes:
Smith … has built a reputation as a moderate pro-business Democrat.
Let’s examine Smith’s so called “moderate” record.
Sounders FC: Keep Trying, If You Must
Sports by Anton on June 16th, 2009 with 15 Comments so far.Watching the Sounders FC play soccer on television (even when it’s on beautiful FSN-HD) lacks the same intensity as watching at Qwest field. In that way, soccer as a spectator sport is parallel in many ways to Hockey – both sports jump way up on the “I can see myself spending money on this” scale once you actually attend.
Oregon Legislature Restricts Initiative Process
Politics by NW Digest Team on June 16th, 2009 with No Comments so far.KGW in Portland has the heart of the story:
The bill will allow state election officials to prohibit someone from registering as a paid signature gatherer if they’ve been convicted of fraud or forgery.
The Tacoma News Tribune’s Olympia reporter, Joe Turner, posted the following in response: “Eyman’s Legions Be Forewarned.” (For source material, he also posted the Oregon Secretary of State’s press release.)
Turner has been covering Tim Eyman and his initiatives for the TNT for as long as Eyman has been in the initiative business. As Turner points out, similar restrictions have been proposed but failed in the Washington State Legislature.
Seattle Mayor Nickels On His Re-Election Chances
Politics by NW Digest Team on June 16th, 2009 with No Comments so far.Q 13’s Lara Yamada interviewed Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels about his re-election chances and record over the last 8-years. Especially poignant are questions she asks about controversial issues he’s faced. The Seattle mayoral race will be one of a small handful of contests drawing local and regional attention in 2009. Nickels was recently sworn in as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.
